CHAPTER 17

Grisham grabbed the door handle and pushed it open, with Sara and Antonio following behind. The gust of wind that greeted Sara was chilly yet a welcome relief from the stuffy confines of the narrow stairwell. Despite the chaos caused from the helicopter earlier, the dinosaurs were calm once more.

Sara’s gaze drifted further into the horizon, her eyes drawn to the thirty-foot wingspan of some pterosaurs, their necks as long as a giraffe’s “I didn’t know any quetzalcoatluses got through.”

“I’d be surprised if there’s anything that didn’t get through,” Antonio said.

The very sight of them filled Sara with dread. The ocean kept the land-dwelling creatures on Ilha Bela, but the pterosaurs had no boundaries and could soar far from the island’s shores.

Grisham snatched the beeping radio from his belt. “This is Grisham. Go.”

“Give me Sara,” Mack’s voice crackled from the device.

Sara grabbed the radio, her only chance to alert her mentor to the dire situation they all now faced. She glanced once more at the animals, worry gnawing at the back of her neck. “Mack, this is a goddamn mess. We have to get rid of these animals somehow.”

“There’s only one effective way to do that,” Mack said.

“Missile strikes,” Grisham said, reiterating his earlier idea.

“Exactly,” Mack agreed. “But if we do that, the military gets involved. We’d need POTUS to sign off on it, and we can’t use him without Lustrum’s permission. That’s something I’d prefer to avoid.”

“You’re worried about how they’d react?” she asked.

“We should all be worried about that,” Mack said. “They exist by remaining unknown and in the shadows of power. They don’t like the spotlight, but if it’s shined on us, it might hit them, and… As I said, we should all be worried. Another problem is the press. If they find out the U.S. military is bombing the hell out an island off the coast of Brazil, things will spiral fast. Missile strikes would kill the animals, but then we have to deal with their remains.”

Grisham nodded. “True. Some of those dinosaurs weigh upwards of sixty tons. Even a triceratops tips the scales at around six or seven tons.”

“Exactly,” Mack agreed. “So, killing them isn’t the end of the problem.”

“What do we do?” Sara hadn’t asked him for advice in a long time, but now she desperately needed it. Her stomach knotted as she contemplated the world finding out about time travel.

“Lustrum has the power to contain this entire mess.” Mack said. “While I’m dealing with the fallout from Angie’s ‘leadership’ skills, you’re going to Ilha da Morte where you’ll continue with Project Timeline. I’m reassigning some of the people to other projects, including Dr. Zhang.”

“Why isn’t Bai coming to Ilha do Morte? We can still use her. None of this was her fault. If Angie hadn’t—”

“I’m aware of my wife’s part in all of this, Sara. This isn’t a punishment for Dr. Zhang. Her part on Project Timeline has simply come to an end. We’re cutting back on the staff required, so she’s on to other things.
